What exactly does the FREE 30 Minute Introductory Session consist of?
It is important to establish if the client and hypnotherapist can work together successfully to resolve the issue they are experiencing in a reasonable timeframe, hence I will cover the following points.1) What does the client want?
I will interview the client about their specific requirements, and establish if I have the necessary expertise to assist. I will also gauge the level of commitment of the client to the desired change. There needs to be a very high level of commitment to the change in order for it to be successful.
2) Do we get on sufficiently well to work together?
We both need to establish if there is sufficient rapport (mutual understanding) to achieve a favourable outcome for the client. The decision to proceed (if positive) will arrived at jointly.
3) What is hypnosis?
I explain what Hypnosis is and what it isn't. We will discuss the differences between Stage Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy.
4) Does the therapist have control over my mind?
Contrary to what is popularly portayed on TV, there is no mind control involved and the client will not be told or forced to act in an outrageous manner is the way some people do during stage shows. The client is free to accept or reject any of the suggestions that are made during therapy.
The majority of these will come from the client themselves during the interview process and the suggested approach for treatment will be discussed in advance with the client prior to it taking place.
5) Respect and where responsibility ultimately lies...
At all times, the client is treated with respect and is reminded that they are ultimately responsible for carrying out the change they require. The therapist's role is to act as a guide, and to create a "safe haven or space" for the client to explore their options for safe lasting changes, using the techniques considered most appropriate for that individual.
6) How is hypnosis beneficial and why does it work?
If the client decides to proceed with the treatment at the end of the introductory session, the first stage is to undergo an hypnotic "induction", where the client will be asked to relax their body and their mind to enter a relaxed state which is suitable for hypnotic suggestions to be given.
The subconcious mind cannot tell the difference between what is reeal and what is vividly imagined, thus it can create bio-chemical changes in the body based on what it perceives, not based on what is actually real. These can range from increased physical numbness to pain to changes of mental attitude.
For example, most people can easily imagine taking a lemon and slicing it, then putting it towards one's mouth and suddenly biting down hard. The sensation of wincing or perhaps creating more saliva in the mouth can be experienced (a real bio-chemical change) even with the client's full knowledge that the lemon was only imaginary.
Hypnosis uses the client's imagination to create safe lasting changes by giving the subconscious mind suggestions it is likely to accept and act upon in order to carry out its prime directive of preserving the body.
When the induction stage is completed, and the client is suitably relaxed for the next stage, the hypnotherapist may use a combination of storytelling and visual imagery (painting pictures with words) that engage the client's imagination and feelings in order for them to mentally "act out" or visualise certain future or past events in relation to the issue they want resolved.
Thus, a smoker may be asked to envisage a point in the future where they have continued to smoke, and to feel the emotional impact of the consequences, contrasted with the benefits they will experience as a non smoker over the same period.
7) Will hypnosis always be used?
Not in every case. NLP techniques such as anchoring may be used as well as or in place of hypnosis, depending upon the circumstances and what is considered to be in the client's best interests. The client may show some signs of nervousness or reluctance to go into hypnosis and under these conditions an alternative therapy will be discussed, and any treatment that occurs subsequently will be in accordance with the client's wishes.
8) What happens at the end of the session?
At the end of the 30 minute session, the client will be asked if they want to proceed with the proposed treatment and approach that has been discussed. If they do want to proceed, a Client Intake Form will be signed and dated by the client to give permission for the hypnotherapist to undertake the hypnosis. If they do not wish to proceed at this point, then we shake hands and conclude the session, with no hard feelings, no further obligation and no questions asked.
The sessions are always conducted with the client's best interests in mind and in accordance with the ethical rules laid down by the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association.
A copy of these ethics are available here or on our downloads page.
